As you have searched for, and are currently reading this article, it is more than likely you are looking to make money using the internet (and probably haven't had too much success so far!). It is also pretty likely you have researched a hundred and one different ways to do exactly that, heard a great number of miraculous claims concerning mythical turnkey monster-profit making websites, and maybe even brought a few of the products offering this overnight success. If so it is nearly 100% likely you have failed to make even a cent from the internet!
There is money to be made...
I am here to tell you that it is possible to make at least pocket money, and often a lot more, online - the first step though is to stop believing the nonsensical claims that you can be making $100,000 plus within a month. It simply won't happen. If somebody did have a 'secret so powerful' (seen that little catch phrase before?) do you really think they'd dilute it by inviting you to take part for a one of fee of only $40. So forget about the get quick rich schemes and buckle down for the long haul - if you are ready to work your socks off to get it there really is money to be made online.
I haven't tried all the different money making methods online because there are just too many to test. However I believe I have now tried all of the 'classics' you're likely to come across: filling in surveys for about a dollar an hour; buying and selling websites with very limited success; promoting blogs like crazy for AdSense pittance, and even dabbling in Forex trading which ended pretty miserably if I'm honest. In the end, after years of toil and money wasted, I ended back exactly where I started - back in the very difficult, but also very profitable, world of affiliate marketing. In this article I am going to discuss how I have been successful and how to start off on a process which can be highly rewarding financially.
Affiliate marketing - a quick introduction
The basic concept of affiliate marketing, if you don't already know, is to market and sell another person's product in exchange for a percentage of the revenue. The simplicity of the affiliate marketing model is the key here and the reason, for me, why it is perfect for beginners. There are many electronic products, such as e-books and online videos, as well as member based websites which pay commissions without you even handling a physical product- these sites track the links for you directly too so there is no technical difficulty involved.
And I think you'd be surprised how lucrative this particular industry can be - take Money Super Market in the UK for just one example, the comparison site receives commissions totaling millions of dollars simply for redirecting customers to its affiliated products (whether this be insurance, heating and electric bills etc.).
This is of course an extreme example and the marketing involved for these huge sites also aggregates to millions of dollars. However there is still money to be made on the smaller scale - some gambling sites pay 30% of the lifetime revenue of each new member signed up for example, and most products on affiliate product directories like ClickBank pay between 50 and 75% commission on each product. E-books have recently overtaken paper sales in the US and as a result could be just the money-making opportunity you have been looking for.
It isn't easy though and you will need to put a lot of work to have any success at all. You need to pick a product that people will buy; create a website with some good content; include affiliate links people will click on, and then market the hell out of it- and even then you may not succeed! Keep trying though, keep refining your technique and testing new niches and eventually success should come - this is what I have managed to do and from my ten different websites I now make a comfortable living, I still work, but now only part time, and I hope to retire at a relatively early age too thanks to affiliate marketing. I will never be a millionaire but I think you'll agree thousands of dollars a year is a lot better than being lost in the affiliate wilderness.
Where to start - finding your niche and products...
So where do you start? Well finding a product to promote is not a bad place! There are literally thousands upon thousands of products out there, many of which are admittedly very poor quality and which will never sell a single copy. On the other hand there are also a great many products which will sell naturally because people seek them out actively, or, will sell because the sales copy is so excellent. The best products, the type you are looking for, are those products of high quality and good commission that will sell like they're running out fast. These gems are not that easy to find though I'm afraid.
As I say ClickBank isn't a bad place to start for anyone new to affiliate marketing as the Clickbank marketplace has a huge range of different niches and affiliate products. The problem is that many of the products have already been too heavily promoted and the markets have become saturated - for instance weight loss and language learning are so popular with affiliate marketers it is very, very difficult to penetrate the market at all. On the other hand many of the products have awful sales copy and market appeal so you won't sell any of these ones either.
There are however good, untapped niches out there just waiting to be exploited - I made a lot of money promoting iPad related products by beating the affiliate wave, and also promoted specific sporting events like the Grand National 2011 to attract highly targeted, and hence profitable, customers in two of my successful affiliate ventures. I would recommend picking products where the ClickBank gravity is good, you would buy the product yourself and you know a fair amount about the niche (this comes in very useful when marketing, trust me!).
If you really don't know what products you will be able to sell, or really want to gain access to the very best and latest niches, there are some excellent products out there. Brad Callen's niche finder for instance is one of the best products to do this as it allows you to identify how competitive any keyword is (and hence the niche) and also to find the most under exploited niches. This will allow you to get ahead from the very beginning of your affiliate marketing career - I will also say that you can include more than one product on your website if you wish although they must be related and also complementary. You can't really get away with saying two competing products are the best in the field, just as you shouldn't market weight loss and online marketing products side by side.
Setting up an affiliate website...
Next you need a website or blog to promote your selected products. In the past this wasn't actually a necessity as you could promote affiliate links directly (letting their sales page do the hard work for you). However Google AdWords has banned affiliate links for Google ads along and also now EzineArticles has banned them from author resource boxes. It is now possible to 'cloak' affiliate links but I honestly find it a lot easier to set up your own website - this gives you greater control, the chance to build an email list and also the opportunity to include your own sales copy (often this will be better than the actual sales page).
Weebly is a good site if you want your own site but don't wish to spend any money in the beginning - Weebly offers a free sub domain and hosting and the sites are also listed in Google pretty quickly. I have two good Weebly sites myself but I have to say the results are far better if you invest in a domain name and professional hosting - once you progress and start seeing results (or not) you will need to upgrade to the professional features which aren't really worth the money.
Site Build It has to be my favourite website for high quality website design and hosting though and the easiest way to start a professional looking affiliate site- the support is excellent and guides you through the whole affiliate process so you have the very best chance of success with affiliate marketing. There is no other website builder with this level of focus specifically on making affiliate sales and it really is a must for any affiliate marketer in my opinion.
Marketing your affiliate site...
So now you have a great product and a fantastic new website but I'm afraid it is only now that the real hard work begins, the real battle that scares most would be affiliate marketers off. It has of course come to the time to start marketing your site, to start attracting those visitors who will buy the products and make you your commission. This really isn't easy and even the best affiliate marketers don't get results immediately - if you use the 'hot' niches identified in Brad Callen's software you should start to see positive results after a month or two I'm sure (sometimes even less).
There are a huge number of useful methods to market a new affiliate website but I'm afraid I simply won't be able to go into any of these in great detail here. However I will say that it takes time for a new website to get noticed so don't get disheartened early on, and also, more importantly, that the more you promote your website, the better the results you will eventually get. It is first of all essential to submit your sites to the search engines and directories, Google and Yahoo especially. It is then important to aim for highly targeted traffic in your niche, and remember lead quality is far more important than quantity - if you are promoting laptops, for example, and have a visitor searching 'I need a new laptop' on Google, this is far better than one hundred people coming from one of these paid to surf sites you have paid five or six dollars.
I would also recommend you don't get involved in a constant struggle for low quality backlinks - backlinks are essential to rank highly in the search engines but these will come with writing good quality content and becoming a useful member of communities and forums in your niche. By contributing helpfully to forum and blog discussions you gain a good reputation and can drop your website link in to help with SEO. The more you put your site out there the more visitors you will get and there are loads of ways to do just this.
I also write articles for EzineArticles as part of my marketing efforts and these provide valuable traffic and one way backlinks - many of my articles are republished which once again provides new backlinks. As well as this article marketing technique you can also use social media like Facebook and Twitter, social bookmarking like Stumble Upon and paid advertising to drive new traffic to your site. As long as your website content is useful and interesting you will soon get noticed - content is king online nowadays and as long as you keep this in mind you will probably one day see an explosion in both your visitors and ClickBank sales (as long as you keep promoting your site heavily and on a consistent basis). I will also say finally that once you have them, an email list is an excellent way to keep first of all, and also upsell, to your existing customers.
Website marketing really is a very complicated business however and it takes a huge amount of reading to master even a small percentage of the methods available. There are loads of top products online so you should read around and maybe invest wisely to help you gain some more in depth understanding than I can offer here.
And a final note...
Just to conclude I would like to say a big thank you for reading this article and good luck in your career as an affiliate marketer. There really is money to be made out there so go and grab your slice of the pie just like I did - stick with it, try new things, and eventually I am sure you'll reach that magic day where the first sale appear is in your ClickBank account!
